Liliana first developed an interest for photography while attending a graphic design school in Oklahoma City. Part of the curriculum required students to shoot and develop their own film and prepare the images for print. The process of developing an image that she had artistically created intrigued Liliana so much that she chose to pursue a job at a local studio. The studio owner put a camera in her hands and told her to shoot the next senior photo shoot. After seeing the results of Liliana’s first photo shoot, he hired her.
Liliana’s passion for photography developed, and she soon became the studio manager. Although shooting in a posed studio setting was the standard for most of the sessions, Liliana found it hard to create a natural, comfortable environment—something that she saw as a vital component in capturing the character and essence of those she was shooting. Once Liliana started moving her photo shoots outdoors or to a home setting, she began noticing that the subjects looked happier and more natural than they did in a posed setting.
Liliana believes that when people, especially children, are placed in front of bright lights that flash in their eyes and are told to smile by a stranger the result is unnatural, at best. The portrait should portray the soul of the person in the photo. By designing a shoot that contains a comfortable environment with familiar surroundings, Liliana captures on film the true beauty of the clients being photographed so that they may have a vivid reminder of the emotions surrounding that day.
